The Best Jobs Of The Future

The Best Jobs Of The Future The Best Jobs Of The FuturePosted May 3, 2017, by Vivien Luu The future of work is changing. Fast. Industries are shrinking, jobs are vanishing, and professional skills now have a rapid half-life. There are some overarching shifts poised to change the nature of work itself over the next decade, says research director of the Institute of the Future, Devin Fidler. Its a brave new world out there. And if youre feeling a little nervous, we dont blame you. Youre probably wondering How do I keep up with it all? What sort of professional skills do I need to gain? What are the best jobs to have in the future? All great questions. And thankfully, we have the answers. By looking at the World Economic Forums Future of Jobs report and MONEYs research findings, well show you which career paths and skills will give you the brightest future and have companies clamouring to hire you 1. Data analysts The World Economic Forum (WEF) surveyed thousands of CEOs f rom around the globe and across various industries, and the overwhelming majority agreed that data analysts were on the top of their to hire list. Why? Because we humans currently generate a TONNE of data. In fact, an IDC study projects that by 2020, every human on the planet will generate approximately 1.7 megabytes of new data every second of every day. Thats a lot of data. For companies, plenty of data means plenty of opportunities to mine this information for rich consumer insights. And in order to do this, the WEF says theyll need a kollektiv of data analysts to make sense and derive insights from the torrent of data generated by technological disruptions. Data analysts will be as important to the Information Age as the prospector was to the Gold Rush. After all, whats the point in having all of this data, if you cant mine it for all its worth? Salary range $52K-$123K Relevant course ADMA Analytics Certificate The average pay boost each skill brings SAS (Statis tical Analysis System) +6.1% Data Mining/ Data Warehousing +5.1% Data Modelling +5% Forecasting +3.5% 2. IT and mathematics professionals No surprises here. Hardcore techies and maths nerds will totenstill be in red-hot demand heading into the future as they continue to form the backbone of innovation and industry. Programmers, software developers and information security analysts will be particularly important, as established industries and emerging niches need these professionals to build the next generation of platforms, applications and technologies and more importantly, to make sure theyre secure. Tech professionals are already a highly sought after pool of workers, and the wonderful knock-on effect of being so coveted by companies is enjoying awesome work conditions and a nice paycheque. Its no wonder ICT dominated the list of happiest jobs last year, securing an impressive 7 out of the 10 top spots If youre lucky enough to already work in this field, youre probably wo ndering what sectors or specialisations will offer the fruchtwein growth into the future. Tech mogul Bill Gates says that if he had his time again, hed drop out of college in an instant for these three promising fields Artificial Intelligence Energy Biotechnology Salary range $50K-$220K Relevant courseCertificate IV in Web-Based Technologies The average pay boost each skill brings Software development +4.9% IT security and infrastructure +3.7% Systems troubleshooting +3.3% 3. Architects and engineers Over the next three years, the need for architects and engineers is set to skyrocket, with todays demand for these highly-skilled professionals already eclipsing supply. Architects and engineers are like the masters of the universe they turn dreams into reality and do everything from powering planes and driving space exploration to transforming entire cities and the way we live. As we inch closer to major breakthroughs and take on the worlds most wicked problems large-scale, com plex problems that are not evil per se, but are considered wicked because theyre notoriously difficult to solve like the refugee crisis, climate change and dwindling resources, well need the ingenuity and might of architects and engineers to lean on. According to the World Economic Forum report, the biggest growth specialisations are Biochemicals Nanotechnology Robotics (mechatronics engineering) Materials Salary range $50K-$220K Relevant course Master of Engineering Management The average pay boost each skill brings Computer-aided design/manufacturing +3.4% 4. Specialised sales professionals By 2020, sales reps with technical chops will become increasingly important. As companies of the future continue to create the most innovative and technologically complex products weve ever seen, theyll need a taskforce of specialised sales reps particularly ones who can handle technologically complex sales to target new clients and drive growth. As MONEY and Payscales joint report points out, sales professionals with strong technical skills enjoy an average 4.3 per cent boost in their salary and typically fatten their paycheque if they can handle technologically complex products and services. Beyond being tech-savvy, sales reps will also need to have exceptional communication skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence. Salary range $41K-$91K Relevant course Certificate IV in Business Sales (BSB40615) The average pay boost each skill brings Contract negotiation +5% Technical sales +4.3% 5. Senior managers Over the next few years, the WEF says senior managers will continue to be highly coveted by companies, particularly in sectors that are ripe for disruption. According to analysts and forecasters, the sectors that are most likely to experience a major shakeup include The energy sector Real estate Financial services (particularly mobile banking) Media and entertainment So if youre a manager on the cusp of transitioning into a senior exec simply looking for a new challenge, consider moving into one of the above fields. Just remember that if you want to be the font of executive companies will drool over, exceptional managerial skills simply arent enough anymore. Moving into the future, companies will seek a new type of senior manager who will successfully steer companies through the upcoming change and disruption. Salary range $110K-$203K (varies widely depending on industry) Relevant course Master of Business Administration (Innovation and Leadership) The average pay boost each skill brings Strategic project management +4.4% Financial analysis +4.0% Business analysis +3.8% Forecasting 3.5% New business development +3.0% 6. Product designers With repetitive and monotonous jobs becoming increasingly automated in the future, the WEF says creative jobs will become more important than ever, particularly ones that require a human touch. Its why designers will become increasingly important as we inch closer to 2020, with commercial, product and industrial design jobs set to experience the most growth and demand. With emerging fields like robotics and wearable technology and industries like the energy sector poised for disruption, well need product designers to design everything from driverless cars and the future of transport through to new gadgets and manufactured goods. Salary range$40K-$100K The average pay boost each skill brings Lean manufacturing +3.6% Computer-aided design/manufacturing +3.4% 7. HR specialists Given the general disruption felt by industries across the board, and the fierce competition for talented programmers, architects and engineers, its no wonder CEOs from around the globe told the WEF that one of their highest priorities is to find clever and efficient ways to secure a solid talent pipeline. Thats why HR specialists will be in such high demand over the next few years. Roles within the computer and mathematics, and architecture and engineering job families are al ready notoriously difficult to recruit for and with the WEF forecasting that these fields will create an additional 2 million jobs around the world by 2020, companies will be being over backwards to hire talented HR specialists to help reinvent HR as we know it. And the future of HR is digital. We see how digital has transformed media, retail transportation and education. Now its HRs turn, writes Jeanne Meister, a partner at HR advisory firm, Future Workplace. The next journey for HR leaders will be to apply a consumer and digital lens to the HR function, creating an employee experience that mirrors their best customer experience. But talent acquisition isnt the only thing HR specialists will need to focus on. According to the WEF report, 65% of CEOs and industry leaders said they were looking to heavily invest in reskilling their current employees. So HR professionals with a strong background in developing training programmers will also be highly desirable. Salary range $50K-$115K Relevant course Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) The average pay boost each skill brings Contract negotiation +5% 8. Regulatory lawmakers and government relations experts As our future becomes besieged with exciting (and terrifying) new technologies like driverless cars, long-range drones and gene-editing tools, well need regulatory lawmakers and policy experts to navigate the legal and ethical conundrums that go hand in hand with new tech. Let me give you an example that the car industry is already grappling with. No matter how tresor they may be, driverless cars still need to be programmed to respond in the event of an accident. So, if theres a crash, who should the car be programmed to save? The driver? The pedestrians? Or the other drivers? These ethically murky grey areas will need to be thoroughly explored by lawyers and government regulators alike as they attempt to legislate and regulate our increasingly complex future. Salary range $45K -$220K Relevant course Bachelor of Laws Want to really future-proof your career? Eating dinner earlier can lower your risk of cancer

Eating dinner earlier can lower your risk of cancerEating dinner earlier can lower your risk of cancerEuropeans are cool and all with their late hour dinners, but you may want to start looking into early bird specials if you want to live longer. According to a new study published in theInternational Journal of Cancer, the later you eat dinner (specifically after 9 p.m.), the mora likely you are to develop breast and prostate cancer. This is quite significant considering that breast cancer is the No.1 cancer women develop and one in every nine men have prostate cancer.Speaking of those Europeans, the study was conducted in Spain and followed 621 people with prostate cancer and 1,205 with breast cancer and then a control group of 872 men and 1,321 women who didnt have cancer were also watched. The researchers looked at the subjects sleep patterns, the timing of their dinner, physical activity and dietary habits before they developed cancer (if they were part of that group.) After adjust ing for factors including family history of cancer, socioeconomic status and possible environmental carcinogenic impact, it was found that the subjects who ate before 9 p.m. or ate and then waited at least two hours before sleeping had a 26% lower risk of developing prostate cancer and a 16% lower risk for breast cancer versusthe subjects that usually ate after 1000 p.m. or went to bed shortly after their last meal of the day.Night shift workers are at riskThe researchers focused on those two cancers in particular, not only because of their prevalence but also because they are the two cancers mostly associated with night shift work. Working at night can make some peoples immune systems much more susceptible to disease as their circadian rhythms are disturbed because their exposure to light is thrown off and their diet tends to be out of sync. Eating at night and sleeping for most of the day can alter insulin and immune function. It should be noted that the researchers did not conclud e that eating later causes cancer, but this does show a high correlation. However, this was only conducted on Spanish people and eating times clearly differ from country to country and every human being has their own unique optimal time to eat and sleep.

New Featherweight Champion Nano Ceramics

New Featherweight Champion Nano Ceramics New Featherweight Champion Nano Ceramics New Featherweight Champion Nano CeramicsLight as a feather and tough as steel. Those are the two properties of the ideal werkstoff, and they dont usually come together. Ceramics, be they new or ancient, are typically strong and light, but always brittle their tendency to shatter has long kept them out of the category of ideal. But now, thanks to researchers at the California Institute of Technology, the worlds oldest malleable material is now the strongest, lightest stuff on the planet. And, oddly, its flexible to boot. There will be no more chipped urns for the antiquarians of the future. The trick is to construct the material on the nano level. To do that, Julia R. Greer, a professor of materials science andmechanics at the university, used a technique called two-photon lithography. In essence, a laser works its way through a liquid polymer, slowly hardening it nanometer by nanometer. Once this initia l structure has been fully written, a nano ribbon of aluminum oxide (a ceramic) is wrapped onto the exterior. Then the polymer on the interior is etched away, leaving nothing but a ceramic lattice, made of tubes a micron in diameter. And the walls of those tubes are a mere 10 nanometers thin. A fractal nanotruss. Image Caltech.edu Thin and Strong Paradoxically, its the extreme thinness that gives the material its strength. It enables you to get as close to an ideal as possible, says Greer. Usually, when force is applied to a material, it fractures wherever there are flaws. But with the precision that comes fromGreers method, the ceramic lattice is nearly flawless, so buckling occurs well before any fracture. When compressed by nearly 50 percent, the structure was still able to pop back to its original shape. A similar structure, with a wall thickness of 50 microns, shattered. And metals built to the same specs were nowhere near as strong. The lightness has as much to do with the mat erial as with the structure, which is more air than matter. You can no longer look at the effect of the structure only, or material only, says Greer. Now you have to look at them together. Future Potential The potential applications for the strongest, lightest materialwhich happens to be flexibleare, of course, many. Airborne uses, where weight is crucial, abound. The skin of airplanes, for instance, might be one of the first places the material might be put to use. Balloons could be made to float without adding a gas. Just a minimal vacuum at the opening and the entire balloon would become lighter than air. Batteries could be made worlds lighter. Tiny biomimicking devices could use the ceramic scaffolding. And, as ceramics make excellent thermal buffers, the thinnest of ceramic sheets could be used anywhere two temperatures need to be kept from each other. One could also, conceivably, print out lightweight, tear-proof, damage-proof sheets. Stack a few of those together (well, more than a few) and youve got a seemingly impossible construction unit. It feels like a brick, its as strong as a brick, if you drop it will never shatter. Lighter than a feather and damage proof, says Greer of the potential future. Basically, weve completely changed the world. Before that change can be put to use, Greer and her colleagues need to find a faster way to process the ceramic. The two-photo lithography is an excruciatingly slow process. Though it can accurately create complex structures, each featuremust be written into the polymer. To scale something up, it would have to be new technology, says Greer. Once that technology is worked up and disseminated well be living in a lighter, stronger, more clay-like world. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionIt feels like a brick, its as strong as a brick, if you drop it will never shatter.Prof. Julia R. Your Future Is in the (Business) Cards

Your Future Is in the (Business) Cards Your Future Is in the (Business) Cards According to a Microsoft study, a goldfish now has a longer attention span than you do.Hey, over here - theres moreMicrosoft found that the average humans attention span is now eight seconds, down from 12 seconds in 2000. The goldfish clocks in at nine seconds. Why does Microsoft care, and why should you? Because shorter attention spans affect concentration, comprehension, reading, advertising, and interpersonal interactions.Given how short the average persons attention span is - and that includes hiring managers and recruiters - how can you become a memorable candidate? Its actually quite easy Leave behind a business card. The practice of exchanging business cards seems to have originated in China in the 15th century, according to some sources. The practice has evolved since then, but theres a reason its mucksmuschenstill with us all these centuries later. Having a card to present while networking accomp lishes several thingsIt shows that youre prepared. Youre not fumbling around for a pen and scrap of paper on which to scrawl your contact info.It presents the important information you want a person to know, such as how to contact you and how to find out more about you.It demonstrates respect for the tradition of reciprocating the exchange of cards. Avoid that uncomfortable moment when someone gives you a gift and you dont have one for themIts not enough to simply have a business card you want something that presents the best of you. A few guidelines on what makes a great cardProvide only necessary information so the card is not cluttered and doesnt confuse the reader. Name, one phone number, one email address, maybe a mailing address, maybe a LinkedIn URL (not Facebook), and a personal website, if you have one.Select a simple theme/colors/font combination that reflects your personality but looks professional. Your business card should be easy to read, and card scanners should be ab le to parse it. A fancy script and/or tiny typeface are red flags about your judgment.Give yourself a title, like Sales Consultant, Customer tafelgeschirr Specialist, Digital Marketer - something memorable and realistic. Unless youre in a really creative field, dont get cutesy. No one likes a Chief Thinking Officer, Creative Guru, or Rainmaker Extraordinaire.Utilize the back of the card for a few lines about your accomplishments or qualifications, such as Masters degree in education, Certified in C++, or Proficient in Google Analytics. Leave at least the top half of the cards back empty so the person has space to write notes.Remember Receiving another persons card is an invitation to follow up with them. Duck into another room and make notes of everything you can remember about your conversation on the back of the card. This may include information like a spouses name, a reminder to send an article of interest, inside information about their company, projects theyre working on, or next steps for following up.You are an outsider trying to get inside. Thats what networking is all about. The goal is for the recipient to remember you weeks and months later. You want them to think of you when they have a vacancy or hear about one before its posted. You are continuing a 400-year tradition of introductions and etiquette, so carry the cards in a decent case. Resist the temptation to use a binder clip or rubber band. You may make a good first impression, but a business card leaves a lasting impression. Thats how you become memorable.Ferris Kaplan is founder of Best of You Resumes.

Know-it-alls are worse at evaluating the truth, research says

Know-it-alls are worse at evaluating the truth, research saysKnow-it-alls are worse at evaluating the truth, research saysBeing right - or believing were always right - can become an addiction. Whether we believe in our superior instincts, logic or intellect, confirming our beliefs boosts our ego and gives us confidence in ourselves in an insecure world. But heres the twist the key to being respected for being right is to admit when youre wrong. Understanding when youve made the wrong call can make you more effective leader andcoworker.According to recent Duke University research comprised of four studies, intellectual humility may have an impact on how youmake decisions. What is intellectual humility? Itsdefinedasthe degree to which people recognize that their beliefs might be wrong.A real-world example of why being right doesnt get you furtherSometimes, being tough to work with may evenjeopardize your job.Facebook engineer Andrew Bosworth detailed how his job depended on his capac ity to start being a being a better coworkerin a blog post. He wrote about how he was the only engineer keeping Facebooks newsfeed running, but one of his peers, who was CTO at the time, told Bosworth that he wouldnt be continuing to work on it. The reason Bosworth was known for being hard to work with, always insisting on doing things his way and giving no room for others to express their opinions.Bosworth wasnt fired, but was forced to work in a new capacity at Facebook because of how he treated others. The realization hit me hard. In short, I thought my job was to be right. I thought that was how I proved my worth to the company. But that was all wrong. My job was to get things done and doing anything meaningful past a certain point requires more than one person. If you are right but nobody wants to work with you, then how valuable are you really? How much can you realistically expect to accomplish on your own? I was winning my way out of a job one argument at a time, Bosworth wro te.So you might want to consider thinking twice before acting like youre always right at work. It may cost you that promotion.Hear out your coworkersDoes your manager know that listening to others is an effective way to manage a company? The studys lead author, Duke professor Mark Leary, said many bosses believe theyre right, to the detriment of their teams. If youre sitting around a table at a meeting and the boss is very low in intellectual humility, he or she isnt going to listen to other peoples suggestionsYet we know that good leadership requires broadness of perspective and taking as many perspectives into account as possible, Leary said in the write-up.Leary also told Duke that people with intellectual humility may have strong views, but acknowledge that they are not always right and are open to others demonstrating why theyre wrong on topics both larger and smaller in scale.Religion as a test for intellectual humilityAccording to the write-up, in one study, participants read e ssays that were pro-religion and anti-religion and then evaluated the personality of each author. Those who were less certain about religious beliefs showed better judgment in evaluating other kinds of evidence.Study 2 revealed that participants high in intellectual humility were less certain that their beliefs about religion were correct and judged people less on the basis of their religious opinions, according to the study.People who exhibited intellectual humility during the research did a better job evaluating the quality of evidence - even in mundane matters, according to the write-up.
