5 Tips for Finding a Job on Social Media

5 Tips for Finding a Job on Social Media As a job seeker, you have probably researched all there is to know about cover letters, resumes, and interviews. However, are you familiar with the latest technique of job searching â€" social media? Yes, social media is not all about posting cute  photographs of your cat  or silly videos. Nowadays, more and more companies have turned to social media to fill their vacant posts, and about three out of four hiring managers actually check out a potential candidate’s social media profiles before they make their hiring decision. So how do you go about finding jobs on social media? 1. Spread the word. Whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or LinkedIn, let your friends and followers know that you are actively looking for a job. Let them know what type of work you are looking for, and one of them may just know that someone is hiring. Please note, only do this if you are currently unemployed. If youre looking to change jobs while still in a job its much more sensible to keep it on the down low, as you never know who people know and you may find yourself unintentionally unemployed as a result! 2. Engage with a prospective employer. Find out if a company that you would like to work for is on social media. If so you can follow them to learn of any opportunities within the organisation and keep yourself updated on any changes. You can also use social media to engage with the company and communicate your knowledge and passion for a job in the field. LinkedIn is particularly good for getting yourself known by the hiring manager. Do your research to identify the relevant individual  on LinkedIn and introduce yourself and explain your intention. Hopefully they will think of you when there is a vacancy in the company. 3. Network with people who work in the field of your interest. Social media is a great place to network with other industry professionals. Track down individuals who are working in the fields you are interested in, whether it be on LinkedIn, Twitter or even Google+ and connect with  them. You can then engage with their posts and build a relationship with them online. It’s even better if they work in companies that you are targeting. You never know, they may be willing to refer you, which offers you  a much better chance of landing a job in the company. 4. Make your social media profiles “employer-friendly”. Make sure that your profile picture is  professional. Its probably best to avoid late night party snaps or overly posed selfies, or at least keep them on a network with your settings set to private! On your profile its a good idea to include a short bio about yourself, your work background and what kind of role youre looking for. You can also include a link to your resume or online portfolio on your profile.   5. Establish yourself as an expert in your  field of interest. Keep up to date  with news and updates  about companies in your  field of interest. Try to engage with their social updates or articles, by commenting on or sharing  them, and make sure that your comments are relevant. The more you do the better, as it will help to get yourself known. Be helpful because you never know if a potential employer could be reading.

Do You Know That Song

Do You Know That Song   It was a daunting task. Colby and Schenae were not exactly sure why they agreed to try it. Both had been professional transcriptionists for many years. They loved their jobs. When the boss asked them to participate in a research project, they hardly felt it was appropriate to refuse. So, they reluctantly agreed. They were going to go up against the IBM Watson supercomputer, which is called “The smartest machine on Earth.” In 1997, another IBM computer called “Big Blue” beat world champion chess player Garry Kasparov in a six game tournament match. That was the first time a machine beat a human in a complex task. While both Schenae and Colby are very intelligent, Kasparov is a genius. If he could be beaten, what chance did the two women have? If it turned out badly, they feared that they might lose their jobs. Colby and Schenae were selected for their love of music. Colby never listens to the radio and only likes classical music. One of her favorite pieces is “Moonlight Sonata,” by Debussy. She could listen to that song for hours. Many are familiar with the shorter version of the piece, which lasts only a few minutes. However, there is a much longer version of the same piece that takes over an hour for an orchestra to play it properly. That is her favorite. Schenae’s musical tastes are quite different. She also hates the radio, because all the songs are programmed by, you guessed it, a computer. In her opinion, they play the same songs too frequently, which is boring. Her musical tastes are songs with more street creed. She likes the newest hip hop and edgy rap songs that rarely get much radio play. She is a good rapper herself and recites many of the most complex rap lyrics from memory. This is why she is a good transcriptionist. She hears the most complex word combinations and instantly makes sense out of it. This is her natural talent. Both the women were shocked to learn they each had to transcribe the lyrics by listening to a cappella versions, with no background music, of two songs from the country and pop music categories. Ugh! Neither woman listened to any of that music. Now it is time to guess the songs from a single line of lyrics: IBM Watson says the lyrics are, “The startled me truck bed though barlow.” Colby says, “Least I don’t need to beg or borrow.” IBM Watson says the lyrics are, “Blue gene bear bear yeah.” Schenae says, “Blue-jeaned baby.” IBM Watson says the lyrics are, “You press at bottom to your live in peace.” Colby says, “You press the bottle to your lips.” IBM Watson says the lyrics are, “You got me a loon.” Schenae says, “You got me alone.” Answers: Runnin’ With the Devil Van Halen Tiny Dancer Elton John Ticks Brad Paisley I Knew You Were Trouble Taylor Swift Image Source

We got top companies to help Debutants build their future selves - Debut

We got top companies to help Debutants build their future selves - Debut Ah, the morning after. This is usually about the time you start going over the mistakes from the night before. But there were no mistakes from yesterday evening (30th November). The only buzz came from seeing CH2M, Laing ORourke, Network Rail, Newton Europe and  Shell  team up with Debut to put on a scintillating information evening for young engineering hopefuls. The theme of yesterday’s event centered around ‘The Future You’. We invited Debut users at different stages of education to interact with these amazing employers to get them thinking about where their future career paths might go. Naturally, they jumped at the chance, some with not a second to lose before they started in the big wide world. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do after my studies, 2nd year Luke said, Hopefully, this evening will give me a better idea. Nights at the roundtable After 2 minute introductions from our company delegates, the group broke up into five tables and each was assigned an employer. Then, each employer and group of Debutants had a 15 minute roundtable discussion, with the students and grads getting the chance to ask their burning questions. It was a beautiful thing seeing engaged young people confer with the companies they dreamt of working for. And it would seem they learnt a lot. I got a really good idea of what I’m suited for and not suited for, said Miracle, a Material Science and Engineering student from Queen Mary. And job opportunities I never would have learnt about otherwise. The challenge Tonight’s challenge? Probably not one our Debutants expected. Given nothing but some tape, scissors, newspaper and a cup full of straws each, they were told to build a self-supporting structure. The best one, it was revealed, would win a one-on-one meeting with an employer of their choice. Basically, think arts-and-craft time at school with much, much higher stakes. This is the kind of fun, but focused challenge we love doing  at Debut events. Judging by these reactions, our candidates seems to love them too. After 15 mins, our company delegates picked out five semi-finalists before casting votes for an overall winner, Viktorija! For her inspired straw-built shrine to Justin Bieber, Viktorija won an intimate one-on-one conversation with any employer of her choosing. Here she is looking cosy with Claire from Newton. Don’t they look like they’re having fun? Heres to the future Food, drinks and conversation were the order for the rest of the evening. Debutants rubbed shoulders with company recruiters in a chilled setting over drinks and nibbles. It’s been a great evening, nothing like I expected, said Thomas, a MechEng graduate who’s been using Debut for two months. But after meeting with some employers I feel a lot more confident about what’s ahead of me. We at Debut have a lot of confidence in these young, creative thinkers and in YOU, Insight blog reader! If you get a Talent Spot to the next Debut event, you should definitely come along. It just might be the beginning of the Future You. Debuts The Future You event gets crafty Download the Debut app and  get Talent-Spotted by amazing graduate employers!
